Ralph: Ralph and Piggy together represent the struggle for order and democracy .
Jack: At first, he is the leader of his choir group, who become hunters as the book progresses. Finally, his savage personality and ability to tell people what they want to hear allows him to overtake Ralph as chief.
Piggy: Piggy is a short and overweight boy who wears glasses and represents order and democracy. Piggy's constant polishing of the glasses shows his desire for clear-sightness and civilization.
Simon: Simon is killed soon afterward by all of the other boys who were caught up in a savage dance.
Roger: A small boy with dirty and shaggy black hair, Roger represents pure evil and wrongness, more so even than Jack. He has no mercy, and is the first one to intentionally kill another boy on the island when he smashed Piggy with a boulder.
Sam and Eric: Sam and Eric are two young twins who always travel and do everything together. Without each other, they are incapable of very much. They represent reliance and unity, and because of this become like one person referred to as Samneric.

l When Jane asks how he received this news, he shocks her further by declaring that her uncle was also his uncle: Jane and Riverses are cousins.
l St. John decides to travel to India as a missionary, and he urges Jane to accompany him-as his wife. Jane agrees to go to India but refuses to marry her cousin because she does not love him.
l Jane immediately hurries back to Thornfield and finds that it has been burned to the ground by Bertha Mason, who lost her life in the fire.
l At Ferndean, Rochester and Jane rebuild their relationship and soon marry.
l At the end of her story, Jane writes that she and Rochester enjoy perfect equality she and Rochester enjoy perfect equality in their life together. She says that after two years of blindness, Rochester regained sight in one eye and was able to behold their first son at his birth.
