the number of表示“……的数量”，作主语的中心词时，谓语动词用单数形式；a number of表示“若干的，许多的”，起修饰作用，相当于many或a lot of，a number of+复数可数名词作主语时，其谓语动词用复数形式。
the number of和a number of的区别
1、意思上不同。a number of表示“许多”，相当于 many；the number of表示“……的数量”。
2、中心词不同。a number of+名词做主语时中心词是所加的名词；the number of+名词做主语时中心词是number。
3、谓语动词要求不一样。a number of谓语动词用复数；the number of谓语动词用单数。
the number of和a number of的用法
1、a number of：A number of 是大量的，等于a lot of一类，后接可数名词复数或代词，谓语动词用复数。词组中还可以加入形容词表示数量大或小等。
a number of：There are a namber of ants on the ground。地上有很多蚂蚁。A number of apples are red。许多苹果是红色的。
2、the number of：The number of介词of同其后名词构成介词短语，修饰the number，当它作主语时，谓语动词用单数。
the number of：The number of the apples is 40。苹果的数量是40。The number of students is 2000。学生的数量是2000人。
