Directions: In this test you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to understand
and use spoken English. The test is divided into three parts.
Part i Read a short passage aloud and answer questions.
Part 2 Speak on a topic.
Part 3 Complete a role-play task with the examiner as your conversation partner.
Part 1 Read aloud the part between the stars and then answer the questions the examiner asks
you.
* My grandfather was a teacher. He was the head teacher of a school for boys between
the ages of thirteen and eighteen. I know that he was a kind and gentle man at heart,
because when I was young (and he was old), he gave me presents, and sat me on his knee,
and told me stories. But I believe the boys at his school were afraid of him. At school, when
he walked into a room full of noisy boys, there was silence at once. When he looked at a boy
with a certain look in his eyes, that boy went red in face, and looked down at his shoes. * If
a boy brought him poor, careless work, my grandfather picked up the boy's book and threw
it across the room, shouting, "Do it afl again, and bring it back first thing in the morning?
If the boy was late, or if he forgot lo bring the work, he had to do it again, and yet again.
My grandfather never forgot.
He was a very different man at school from the man I saw day by day in his own home.
Part 2 Speak on the following topic for about 2 minutes.
What are the sensitive issues that we'd better no~ touch on when we talk with
Westerners? Why?
Part 3 Complete a role-play task with your examiner. Your conversation should last ab.out 4
minutes.
A is a third year student, working part time in a Sino-British (~)Cuitural Exchange
Agency. B (Mr/ Mrs Jones.) is tile assistant manager of the agency. A and B meet at a
newsstand. B wants to buy a magazine, but his/her Chinese is still not good enough to make
himself / herself understood.
You are A. You start a conversation with B. The following is the procedure you should
follow.
● Exchange greetings with B.
● Offer to help and respond lo B's question~ how do you like your job in the agency?
● Express your strong interest in working in a muhi-e-ultural setting after graduation.
● Excuse yourself and say goodbye.
