One year later, Mark, always an eager student, had mastered the recitation, acting,
singing and acrobatics needed for a clown role. He is 1.93 meters tall, which makes it more
challenging for him to perform at times. On July 5, 1996, Mark held his graduation
performance at the Sichuan Opera Theater of Sichuan Province.
After applying makeup and putting on his clown costume, Mark takes on the spirit of
his character. In the world of theater, there is a saying: from an actor's performance on
stage one can see the efforts behind the curtains. Mark was deeply moved by his Chinese
colleagues, including the supporting actors, the wardrobe staff, stage hands and art
designers. The musicians in the band, knowing that the Sichuan Opera Troupe has
difficulties obtaining funds, accompany the actors free of charge. Their kind heartedness,
morale and devotion often inspire Mark.
One minute on stage needs ten years of practice behind the curtains. In the Siehuan
Opera Rolling the Lamp, Mark performed splendidly, though he had studied for only one
year. In another aria, Writing an Article, Mark successfully portrayed the 'ugly dandy~ of
the story.
Mark, as a young American, uses his wide repertoire of expressions, superb skills and
exaggerated movements to depict a clown. Both professionals and amateurs applaud his
performances, and he leaves theatres full of laughter.
Mark has succeeded as the first Sichuan Opera clown played by a foreigner. He made
headlines in local papers, and has gone back to the States with applause in his wake. He
hopes to make his dreams come true, and make Sichuan Opera as famous as Sichuan cuisine.

Passage 3
Test your Nutrition IQ
All of us eat every day, but most of us don't understand nutrition. How much do you
know about good nutrition? Are the following statements true or false?
1. People who don't eat meat can stay hea!thy.
True. As long as people eat enough milk, eggs and meat alternates, they can get
enough protein.
2. Fresh vegetables cooked at home are always more nutritious than canned vegetables.
False. The difference depends more on how vegetables are prepared than whether they
are fresh or canned. Vegetables cooked in too much water can lose a great amount of
vitamins.
3. Food eaten between meals can be just as good for health as food eaten at regular
meals. True. Nutritional value depends on what types of food you eat, not when you eat them.Eating an egg or an orange between meals can contribute to a good diet.
4. Taking extra vitamins beyond the recommended daily allowances won't give you more energy.
True. It's widely believed that extra vitamins provide more energy. But taking more
than the body needs doesn't make it function better, any more than overfilling yourgas tank
makes your car run better.
5. Natural vitamins are better supplements for the diet than synthetic vitamins.
False. There is no difference. A vitamin has the same properties and specific chemical
structure whether made in a laboratory or taken from plant or animal parts.
6. Older people need the same amount of vitamins as younger people.
True. Older people need the same amount of vitamins as younger people although they need fewer calories. Certain illnesses raise the requirements for some vitamins, but that is
true for the young as well as the old.
7. Food grown in poor s0il is lower in vitamins than food grown in rich soil.
False. The vitamins in our foods are made by the plants themselves. They don't come
from the soil. However, the minerals in a plant depend on the minerals in the soil.
If you have answered these questions correctly, you can say you know much about food
and nutrition by today' s standards. But remember that nutrition is a growing science and
that it may be changed as new information is obtained.

Part TV Short Answer
Questions 31--35 are based on Passage 4.
Passage 4
I've Come to Clean Your Shoes
Earlier that evening I received a call from my hometown in Missouri. Mother told me
that my brother and his wife, her sister and the sister's two children had been killed in a car
crash. "Come as soon as you can," she begged.
While Larry made plane reservations for the following morning, I wandered about the
house. I couldn't focus. Agin and again, the words I'd heard on the phone echoed through
my head: "Bill is gone... Marina too. June... and both the children..."
Larry made arrangements for us to leave by seven o'clock the next morning. ,Then he
phoned a few friends to tell them what had happened. Occasionally, someone asked to speak
to me. "If there's anything I can do, let me know."
"Thank you very much," I replied. But I didn't know what to ask for. I couldn't
concentrate.
When the doorbell rang, I rose slowly and crept across the room. I opened the door to
see Emerson King standing on the porch.
"I've come to clean your shoes," he said. Confused, I asked him to repeat.
"Donna had to stay with the baby," he said, "but we want to help you. I remember
when my father died, it took me hours to get the children's shoes Cleaned and shined for the
funeral. So that's what I've come to do for you. Give me all your shoes -- not just your
good shoes, but all your shoes."
While Emerson spread newspapers on the kitchen floor, I gathered Larry's dress and
everyday shoes, my heels, my flats, the children's dirty dress shoes. Emerson found a pan.
Larry located the shoe polish.
While we cleared the supper dishes, Emerson continued to work, saying nothing...
One by one, the jobs fell into place. I went into the laundry room to put a load of wash
into the dryer. ! returned to the kitchen to find that Emerson had left. In a line against one
wall stood all our shoes. Later, when I started to pack, I saw that Emerson had even
scrubbed the soles. I could put the shoes directly into the suitcases.
We got to bed late and rose very early, but by the time we left for the airport, all the
jobs were done.
