Passage 1
Changes in Livelihood
AUTHORITATIVE SCHOLARS place China's social development at the 'lower medium level'
compared to the rest of the world. China has gone through several twists and turns since 1949, and
many people's lives have changed for better or worse as a result. However, today a general
improvement is evident. Since 1978 in particular, many people's life-styles have improved at a
greater pace than in the previous 30 years.
Chinese have not only improved on their diet, clothing, housing and the products they use
every day, but their disposable income has also grown as well. By the end of June 1995, rural and
urban bank savings amounted to 3,545.8 billion yuan.
Figures show that since the 1990s communications equipment, houses, apartments and cars
have begun to replace TV sets, refrigerators and washing machines (which in turn replaced bikes,
watches and sewing machines at the beginning of the 1980s) as the largest individual consumption
items.
According to a conservative estimate, China has about 100, 000 private cars today. Seven
percent of urban residents have installed home phones. The Chinese Post and Telecommunications
Ministry plans 120 million new phone lines for the year 2000, or a phone for every urban
household. Today fax machines, computers and mobile phones are very common and face a booming
market.

Passage 2
Car maker: buy 100 Santanas, get 1 free
SHANGHAI--The biggest car maker in China started a sales campaign that targets wealthy
residents and taxi companies, the two major buyers.
Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp, which makes Santanas, is providing loans to buyers in
Beijing, and is giving away free cars in Shenyang and Harbin.
Businesses that buy 100 or more cars get one free, and taxi companies that buy more than
1,000 Santana cars also get one free.
China is expected to produce 450,000 cars this year. The Shanghai automotive company is
expected to control 51 per cent of the market. It plans to sell 230,000 Santana cars this year.
Enterprises and government authorities are not buying new cars because of tight budgets, so
UplJer-class residents and taxi companies account for most vehicle sales.
In Beijing, about 80 per cent of cars sold this year were bought by individuals.
Santanas, especially the new 2000 models, have become big sellers. In July, the Beijing Asian
Games Village car Market sold 498, 28 percent of its sales that month.
To boost sales in Beijing, the company is providing loans to individual car buyers. Journalists
get the priority.
Experts expect China's taxi industry to grow 15 per cent annually.
The number of taxis in China is expected to grow by 86,300, amounting to 661,300 this year.
At the same time, 45,600 old cars will be replaced.
Therefore, demand for taxis should be 130,000.
Realizing the market potential, SAIC has moved its focus to taxi companies and is providing
loans in Shenyang and Harbin. In addition, the company is setting up new repair stations and
holding technology seminars.
The company's efforts in Beijing, Shenyang and Harbin are a small part of the drive.
Promotions in southern cities such as Wenzhou and Xiamen are being planned.

Passage 3
The New York City Marathon: A World Race
The New York City Marathon was started by a man named Fred Lebow. It began in
1970 as a small, unimportant race. Only 127 people ran, and just 55 of them finished. They
ran around Central Park four times. Few people watched them run. However, over the
years, the marathon grew and became more popular.
Today, people come from all over the world to run in the marathon. Runners must be at
least 18 years old, but there is no age limit. In fact, the oldest runner was an 89-year-old
man. Recently, more than 27,000 people ran in the New York City Marathon. Large crowds
cheered lhe runners and offered the participants cold drinks and encouragement.
The course of the marathon has changed, too. Instead of running around Central Park,
the participants go through the five boroughs of New York City. Queens, Brooklyn,
Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The marathon begins at the base of the Verrazano
Narrows Bridge in Staten Island. The runners go across the bridge into Brooklyn. Then lhey
go up through Queens and into the Bronx. The marathon finishes in Central Park in
Manhattan. The complete course is 26 miles, 385 yards, and takes the best runners less than
3 hours.
Although it has changed since 1970, the New York City Marathon is always exciting.
Through the years, many unusual events have happened during the marathon. For example,
Pat Tuz and John Weilbaker got married a few minutes before the race. Then, they ran the
race with their wedding party. Some people run the whole marathon as a family. Other
people run the race backwards.
In the fall of 1992, Fred Lebow, the founder of the New York City Marathon, slowly
ran his last race. He was very ill with cancer, but he did not want to stop running. In
October 1994, Fred died. However, the New York City Marathon, and all its excitement,
will continue for many years to come.
Questions 21--30 are based on Passage 3.
21. The New York City Marathon was started by an old woman.
22. Less than half of the participants in the first New York City Marathon finished.
23. Many people watched the first New York City Marathon.
24. Runners should be younger than 89 years old.
25. The participants used to run around Central Park.
26. The Marahon now finishes in the Bronx.
27. The complete course of the New York City Marathon is now 385 miles.
28. Pat and John took part in the Marathon after their wedding.
29. Fred died in the fall of 1992.
30. Fred died of cancer.
Part IV
Read Passage 4 and answer the following questions. Make your answers as short and clear as
possible. (20 points, 4 points each)
Passage 4
The McCaugheys: An Unusual Family
Kenny and Bobbi MeCaughey live in Iowa. They have a big family. In fact, they have
eight children. But this family is also very unusual. Mikayla is the oldest child in the family.
She is 6 years old. The other children are Brandon. Joel, Kelsey, Kenny, Natalie, Alexis,
and Nathan. They are all 5 years old. Why are they all the same age? Because they are
septuplets! Septuplets are seven children who are born together.
It is hard work to take care of seven babies at the same time. But Kenny and Bobbi did
not take care of the seven babies alone. In the beginning, many people helped them. The
babies did not sleep a lot. So every day, eight or nine people came to the McCaughey house
to help them. Their friends and families helped to feed, clean, and dress the babies. Every
week, the septuplets used about 170 diapers! They drank a lot of milk, too.
Now the children are older. Bobbi says, "It's easier to take care of the children now.
They feed and dress themselves, and they don't need diapers anymore!" The septuplets
started school this year. But they do not leave the house. Why? The children go to school at
home, like thier big sister, Mikayla. When Mikayla was ready for school, kenny and Bobbi
decided to teach her at home.
"Homeschooling" is popular. Many families in the United States teach their children at
home. The children do all their schoolwork at home. Last year, Bobbi was Mikayla's
teacher. Now, Bobbi is the teacher for all eight of her children.
Questions 31--35 are based on Passage 4.
31. Where does the McCaughey family live?
32. What are septuplets?
33. Who helped Kenny and Bobbi McCaughey take care of the septuplets?
34. Why don't the septuplets wear diapers any more?
35. Why don't the children go to school?
