   Passage 4
CAN ANIMALS BE MADE TO WORK FOR US?
Can animals be made to work for us? Some scientists think that one day animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs that are now done by human beings. They point out that at a circus, for example, we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing quite skillful things. Perhaps you have seen them on the television or in a film. If you watch closely, you may notice that the trainer always gives the animal a piece of candy or a piece of fruit as a reward. The scientists say that many different animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs if they know they will get a reward for doing them.
Of course, as we know, dogs can be used to guard a house, and soldiers in both old and modern times have used geese to give warning by making a lot of noise when a stranger or an enemy comes near. But it may be possible to train animals to work in factories. In Russia, for example, pigeons which are birds with good eyesight, are being used to watch out for faults in small steel balls that are being made in one factory. When the pigeon sees a ball which looks different from others, it touches a steel plate with its beak. this turns on a light to warn people in the factory. At the same time a few seeds are given as a reward. It takes three to five weeks to train a pigeon to do this and one pigeon can inspect 3.000 to 4,000 balls an hour.
Apes have been used in America in helping to make cars, and scientists believe that
these large monkeys may he one day gather crops and even drive trains.
Read Passage 4 and then decide whether the following statemeuts are true or false. Write T for true and F for false on your answer sheet.
  31. Now many animals can do some simple jobs that are done by hurrlan beings.
  32. The trainer usually gives the animal a piece of candy or fruit after it has done the trick.
  33. The reward in the passage means "attention paid to a good behaviour'.
  34. Many animals may be trained to do simple jobs if they know who their trainers are.
  35. An ape is a large monkey.
  36. The writer says that at a circus we can see animals doing clever tricks.
  37. Geese can be used to guard a house.
  38. When the pigeon sees a ball which looks different from the others, it makes a noise.
  39. Trainer usually spends 30 days or so training a pigeon to inspect small steel balls.
  40. Scientists believe apes may drive buses one day.
Part V Questions 41--45 are based on Passage 5.
   Passage 5
At the 1908 Olympics in London the Marathon race was held on a very hot day. The race started at Windsor Castle, one of the homes of the Royal Family, so that the Royal children could see the runners leave. The race was planned to continue for 26 miles 385 yards (42,195 metres), now the accepted distance for this race, into Central London.
Because of the great heat, however, many runners had to give up before they couldfinish the race. Towards the end, the large crowd waited with great excitement for the South African, Charles Hefferon, to come into the stadium first. They were surprised, however, when the first man to appear was the small Italian, Pietri Dorando. Dorando was by now:extremely tired and weak and, as he was running round the stadium towards the finishing line, he fell to the ground, unable to continue. Doctors rushed to help him and he soon got to his feet and continued, with loud cheers from the crowd. As he came close to the line he had to be helped again, this time by a journalist, but finally he finished the race. He was not, of course, allowed to receive the gold medal because he had had help during the race.Afterwards, Dorando argued unsuccessfully that he had not asked for this help. But the medal was given to an American, Hayes, who had finished second. However, Dorando later re-ceived a special gold cup from Queen Alexandra for his courage.
