Amy Johnson was a very ambitious and energetic person. She didn't have much in com-mon with other girls in her school. She played football better than most boys, and unfortu-nately, she made a rather bad impression on many of her teachers. Amy just didn't act the way they thought a girl should. She studied at a university and later took a job as a typist.Although she was enthusiastic and did her best, she made many mistakes and was poorly paid. She didn't want to be a typist anyway -- she dreamed of becoming a pilot.
Amy moved to London, borrowed some money, and leaned to fly. Nobody, however, wanted to hire a female pilot. She decided to fly alone to Australia to prove that she could fly as any man. Her parents lent her money to buy an airplane.
Amy set off on may 5, 1930. Her routetook her over Vienna, Gonstantinople, and Baghdad. She was caught in a sandstorm and had to make an emergency landing in the des-ert. But she landed in India six days later. She had broken the record to India by two days. Over Burma she ran into a monsoon (季风), and was able to save herself only by landing on a football field. She finally reached Australia. The plane propeller had been broken during her last landing, and she had to crash-land. But Amy had proven that she could fly - and that a woman could do almost anything she really put her mind to.

Questions 36~40 are based on the following passage.
Although American informality is well known, many new visitors think that it indicates a "lack of respect". This is especially true in the business world. Americans ofien use first names upon meeting a stranger and do not always shake hands. They often just smile and say "Hi" or "Hello", rather than using a more formal hand shake. It is good to remember that to an American such an informal greeting really means the same thing as a more focal hand shake someplace else slmilarly, Americans do not usually give a special farewell or hand shake to each person when they leave a party of business meeting. They will often just wave good-bye to the whole group or perhaps say, "Well, so long everybody, l'Il see you tomor- row. ' They then will leave. No hand shakes.
Americans seem either totally hurried and hard-working or totally informal and at ease. Often you will see men working at office desks without their chairs and even put their feet up on the desk while they talk on the telephone. This is not meant to be rudE. Once Americans leave the busy streets, they are easy and informal.
A visitor to the United States should therefore understand that being in a great hurry does not indicate unfriendliness and being informal and being at ease does not show a lack of respect. Americans have a great range of customs and habits that at first may seem puzzling to a visitor. In time you will learn these new ways.

Ask three people to look out the same window at a busy street corner and tell you what they see. Chances are that you will receive three different answers. Each perceives some-thing different about it.
Perceiving goes on in our minds. Of the three people who took out the window, one may say that he or she sees a police giving a motorist a ticket. Another may say that he or she sees a rush hour traffic jam. The third may tetl you that he or she sees a woman trying to cross the street with four children. For perception is the mind's interpretation of what the senses -- in this case out eyes -- tell us.
Many psychologists today are working to try to determine just how a person experience or perceives the world around him.
