They entered business school at the end of the economic boom. By the time theygraduated, only half of the students had job offers in May. "It's a real bad luck situation, being in the wrong place at the wrong time," says John Cartwrighl, 35, who graduated fromthe Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. With an MBA inhand, the former journalist and computer engineer figured he~ d be a triple threat in thee commerce business. But no offers were forthcoming. "I thought I could double my salaryby going for an MBA," says Cartwright, who is now considering taking a temporary job inEastern Europe until the economy bounces back. In fact, by March, half of the students saidthey hadn't landed jobs and a third weren't very confident they would find the right one.Still, most see the rotten job market as a passing phenomenon. "We aren't talkingabout 1929," says Ryan Pearson, a 2S-year old graduate of Vanderbih University ~s OwenGraduate School of Management. "It's not anything that will take World War II to get usout of. "Pearson echoes the belief of most of his fellow graduates that an MBA has enduringvalue. A former bank loan officer, he assumed that the degree would vault him a few rungsup the corporate ladder. In the current economic climate, getting to the ladder has provedthe bigger challenge. While he doesn't have his dream marketing job yet, he says that oncehe does (and he is sure he will have one soon) ,the skills and the credentials "will help meclimb faster. Who is better qualified than we are?"
"My optimism comes from two things," says Kristin Greene, a 30 year-old graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. "I"ve always landed on nay feet, and 1 don~t believe it won't happen again. And Wharton has been remarkable." Greene, who was still job hunting after graduating in May, says business school gave her skills that she hadn't developed during her five years as a management consultant in New York and Tokyo."It taught me the importance of teamwork," she says.
The graduating students remain confidenl thai it will also ensure a measure of success.More than half of them expect to have made their first million dollars before hitting age 40.Another 21 percent think it will take only until they're 45. Indeed, the typical MBA expects to be earning more than $ 300,000 annually 10 years after graduation, our survey found. We wonder if professionals are needed to install your security devices. We~ re alsointerested in whether the devices can be easily removed when we need to move equipmentaround. We are, of course, very interested in prices and quantity discounts, if you offerthem.

The Situation:
Assume that you are Megan Phillips, public relations assistant for a grassroots environmental organization, Earth First, 5314 River Road, Evergreen, CO 80439. You are responsible for printing 250 flyers for an upcoming Earth First rally, but the ink cartridges for your two Stellar printers aren't working properly. Although the cartridges are clearly full, no ink is dispensed. When you tried to return the faulty cartridges to your local office supply store, The Office Center, the store refused to take them because you had purchased the cartridges more than 30 day ago.
On the advice of the store manager, you purchase two new cartridges that enable you to print your flyers on time. However, you are frustrated about spending Earth First's funds on faulty equipment. The store manager said that many customers recently had returned Stellar ink cartridges. You hope Stellar isn't losing commitment to quality. After all, you are particularly fond of Stellar ink cartridges, since they are the only cartridge on the market that use environmental safe soy based ink. Decide what will resolve your complaint: a cash refund of $126.50, replacement cartridges, or some other action. Send a claim letter, the cartridge, and a copy of your receipt to Stellar Printer, 908 East State, New York, NY 10001.
