(20 points)Is the UK space programme a waste of money'? A lot of money is put into space research in lhe UK, but only a small portion of it by thegovernment. In {act, private commercial companies fund most of the space research in theUK. The UK space industry currently makes three times the amount of money that thegovernment spends on space research a year, and directs this money back into spaceresearch. This has helped us to produce 10% of the world's output of space related scientificdiscoveries, which is second only to the USA. People have expressed concerns that any money spent on space research could be put tobetter use, for example, in healthcare research. So, should the money the government givesto space research be redirected into healthcare research? After a closer examination, most people would answer 'No'. Tile amomn of money theNational Health Service (NHS) receives from the government each year is hundreds of timesmore than that for space research. The money for space research would make little differenceif redirected into the NHS. But left where it is, the money will make a small but importantcontribution to the nation's future health. For many years people have been benefiting from space research in many direct and indirect ways that are often overlooked or underestimated. Among the more obvious benefits are the satellite-based navigation systems on airplanes and boats, which the space industry has been developing. These systems make travel safer and more efficient. Telecommunications satellites allow us to transmit signals around the globe with extreme speed and precision. Some people believe that we should concentrate on our own planet before we startexploring others. This is a very valid point and we are. For example, space researchprogrammes have been funding the development of weather forecasting satellites, which helpminimise the problems caused by natural disasters. There are many other less obvious benefits of space research. For example, the UK hasrecently joined the international task force to detect and study any near-earth objects, such ascomets and asteroids, which may threaten the Earth. In the future, satellite monitoringcould detect landmines and even the cultivation of illegal drugs. Another spin off from spaceresearch is an artificial heart that has been developed on the same principle as the fuel pumpsin spaeeerafts.Questions 25 29: Look at the underlined words in the text and guess their correct meaningsfrom the context.
