Passage 1
Tiger Woods: Master Golfer!
Golf is an international game. It is played by both amateurs and professionals the world
over. Some people say that it is a sport for the rich and privileged, others say that it is a
sport that everyone can enjoy because there are no barriers. Money, however, generally is
no obstaele because 'public' courses are owned by local government bodies and anyone can
play for a few dollars.
There are four major golf tournaments in the world. In the USA the major tournaments
are the 'Masters~ , US Open and US PGA Championship. The British Open is the only one
of the majors to be played outside the USA. Up until 10 years ago there were almost no
important black golfers in the USA, and certainly none who had ever won a major. Tiger
Woods changed all that.
Tiger was born in 1976 and began his professional golfing career in 1995. He had
distinguished himself by becoming the first black American to win the US Amateur Golf
Championship in 1993. This win allowed him the privilege of being invited to take part in the
prestigious Masters golf championship in 1994, the first of the major golf tournaments to be
held each year. He played well, not winning but finishing in the top 30. This was to be a
springboard for his future successes.
About a month before the year 2002 Masters, the former NBA star, Charles Barkley
accused Augusta National (the course on which the Masters is played) of 'blatant racism'
for making its golf course longer and tougher than ever. Barkley somehow thought the
changes would make it more difficult for Tiger Woods.
Despite all the changes to the course, despite the quality of contenders--five of the top
seven in the world ranking, three of them multiple major tournament winners--Woods won
because he is simply the best. That's why, at age 26, he is the youngest player in golf
history to have won 31 times on the PGA tour, to have won seven majors, to have won three
green jackets, the Masters 'trophy'.
Clearly, big hitters had an advantage at redesigned Augusta, but that was more because
the fairways were soft, spongy and didn't allow for the. golf ball to roll. To suggest that
Woods has won three Masters because the course is perfectly tailored for him is to ignore the
completeness of his game--driving, ball striking, short game, putting, mental toughness.
Still there is no question that Augusta is a brute. Augusta Chairman, Hootie Johnson,
this year, said the biggest reasons for changes at Augusta were players were driving the balls
much further and then having easy iron shots (7, 8 or 9 iron or a 'sand wedged to the
greens on the par 4's. He said Woods used only a very short 9 iron on the 18th last year.
The last question Woods was asked Sunday night before he left was what club he had used
into the 18th green. It was a 7-iron.
Hootie got his wish.
Tiger got his green jacket.

Part 2: Questions 35-39 are based on the following passage.
Passage 2
This is a talk about leisure.
THE NATURE OF LEISURE
Good afternoon students, and welcome to this first lecture on work and leisure. Today I
will be giving an overview of the development of leisure in modern life. First of all just what
do we mean by the term 'leisure'? Leisure is difficult to define. Often it refers simply to the
idea that we are not at work. But does that mean then that retired or unemployed people
have no leisure? Another way of defining it is to say that it is 'discretionary time'. A writer
called Handy for example argues that leisure is that area of our lives in which we have
personal control over what is to take place. It is our 'free time'.
Historically, people in British society had a great deal of leisure time. Before
industrialization the rhythms of work and leisure were tied to the agricultural life of the
village. There were a great many 'holy days' or holidays, about 150 each year. So about one
third of the agricultural worker's life was spent in leisure time. However about two hundred
years ago when the majority of people came to the great industrial cities to work in the
factories, the working day and the working week became much longer. There were many
workers' struggles throughout the nineteenth century to secure more free time for the
ordinary family worker. There were strikes and demonstrations by unionists negotiating for a
54-hour week and then for a 48-hour week. By the last half of the twentieth century many
people had achieved the 36 hour week which meant that the majority of people were working
for five days a week, with the right to have paid holidays. Workers also struggled through
their unions to achieve higher wages, so people had higher disposable incomes. As a
consequence of these changes, leisure has become an increasingly important part of British
society. There has been a commercialization of leisure and the growth of a new industry, the
leisure industry. In the past ten years, however, there has once again been an increase in the
number of hours spent at work although we are not yet back to the cripplingly long hours of
the 19th century industrial worker. Nevertheless, the leisure industry is still a significant
part of the British economy.
The growth of the leisure market does not extend to every one though. There is a great
deal of inequality in Britain today in the way that people are able to enjoy their leisure. The
unemployed find it difficult to share in the usual leisure pursuits that the majority of people
are able to engage in. Although the unemployed have more 'free time', they have very little
disposable income to spend in the leisure market. Women, too, are less likely to be able to
enjoy leisure in the way in which men do. Rosemary Deem who studied the different leisure
patterns of men and women found that there were a number of major constraints on women's
participation in leisure activities. Women have less access to transport, greater commitment
to household tasks, a limited number of public places in which they feel comfortable or safe,
lower disposable incomes and a feeling that sport and physical activity is 'unfeminine'.
In our seminar discussions we can consider these themes, the nature of leisure, the
historical changes in leisure and the patterns of inequality in leisure activities. We will also
be examining the suggestions that have been made about ways to address this problem of
unequal access to leisure in Britain today. To prepare for this discussion read chapter five of
your major textbook, then bring in a list of at least three questions that you would like to
raise with the rest of the class.

Part 3: Questions 40--49 are based on the following passage. 20 points
Passage 3
The Galapagos Islands! Even the name sounds enchanting. I dream of revisiting these
wonderful volcanic islands off the coast of Ecuador, clustered in the Pacific Ocean. I dream
of them for the white sandy beaches, clean sea and glorious sunshine, but mainly for the
amazing wildlife.
Each island has its own peculiar flora and fauna. Charles Darwin visited here in 1835 and
the unique wildlife helped him on his way to a theory of evolution.
The islands are like a television nature programme coming to life. You can swim with
turtles and sea lions, watch iguanas and masked and blue footed boobies. You'll also see
giant tortoises, sharks, penguins and frigate birds, some of which aren't found anywhere
else in the world.
There are many creatures you won't be able to name but local experts are always ready
to tell you all you could wish to know. They'll tell you all about the flora as well as the
fauna so that as you watch a bird moving through the foliage, you' 11 learn weird and
wonderful things about the trees and plants that survive on volcanic rocks.
The colors that surround you are stupendous. You' II feel that you've never seen blue
until you experience the perfect blue of the sea! And the colors of the flora and faur~a are
fantastic! The colors of the best dreams... ! Mine was a two-week trip but my dreams have
continued for more than five years.
Prices for all inclusive trips to the Galapagos vary. The lowest price for a two-week
holiday (including return economy class air travel, full-board accommodation and an expert
guide) is about ~3,000. Various companies offer such packages. Shop around carefully to
find the best deal!
Happy holidays!
