[ 10 points]Passage 1A New Experience Britain continues to surprise me in so many ways! I had my first British pub experienceone evening last week, and I was amazed at }low many differences there are between pubshere and bars at home in the States! Li Yan (the Chinese friend I mentioned)and I decided to go for a drink together afterwe'd been studying in the library. It was early evening. We chose a pub near the universityand as we went in,' we saw two more doors--one marked 'Bar' and the other ' Lounge'.Naturally, because there's no similar choice in the States, we didn't know which to choose,so we looked in the bar first. Well, it was almost empty, but there were a few men standingat the bar, drinking and smoking. The lounge was almost empty too but looked moreinviting and comfortable, so we went in there and sat down at a small table. The bartender(called the barmaid or barman here) was behind the bar and she seemed good and friendly, smiling at us and saying 'good evening' , but we waited and waited and she didn't come totake our order. Li Yan and I joked with each other about the slow-service (even though theplace really wasn't busy). There weren't even any snacks on the table! After about ten minutes, two more people arrived and it was only then that we realizedour mistake. They went straight to the bar and ordered their drinks, and then carried themto a table themselves! We realized we had to do the same, so I went to the bar (counter). The barmaid was very sweet when I explained our mistake, and I told her how, in theStates, we wait for someone to come to the table to take our order. She said she had assumedwe were probably just waiting for friends to arrive. I asked to look at a drinks list and shelaughed, telling me that there is no need for a list in pubs because everyone knows what isavailable! So I checked with Li Yan and ordered two beers'" and then had to answer a wholeseries of questions: pints or half pints? Draught or bottled beer? Bitter, brown ale or lager?I was rather confused because the choices are so different in the States--so asked for advicefrom the bartender and we ended up with a half pint of lager each. Then, I tried to leave hera tip and she thought that was very funny, explaining that it's unusual to tip bar staff (though, apparently, regular customers may offer to buy them a drink from time to time). Anyway, Li Yan and I then sat and enjoyed our drinks, chatting and watching the pubcome alive. The place soon filled up. I imagine lots of people were stopping for a relaxingdrink on the way home from work. The atmosphere was lovely and people seemed veryfriendly. Li Yan later went to the bar to buy a second round of drinks for us and, by then, the place was quite crowded so she had to .wait quite a while to be served. I noticed variouspeople talking to her while she waited. She came back to the table with the drinks and apacket of chips (called crisps here) and a packet of peanuts.., because a guy who was waitingbeside her at the bar told that most people like to 'nibble' something while they drink. LiYan was amused when I told her that snacks are provided free in bars in the states! Anyway, we spent a happy couple of hours enjoying the atmosphere and then wenthome. I was quite sorry when it was time to leave and I'm already looking forward to mynext pub visit--maybe when we are in London next weekend. At least next time I will knowwhat to do so it won't feel quite so strange!Questions 30-34: Decide whether the following statements are true or false according to thepassage. Write "T" for True and "F" for False on the Answer Sheet.30. In the States, customers usually wait for bar staff to go to the table to take theirorder. 31. It is the same as in the States that the customers have a wide choice of different beersin pubs. 32. In British pubs, customers usually don't tip bar staff but they often have to buythem a drink instead. 33. Li Yan got free snacks such as a packet of crisps, and a packet of peanuts in the pub. 34. The text is mainly about what pubs are like in Britain. Part 2: Questions 35,-39 are based on this part. [lO points]Passage 2Look at this page from a telephone book. Then complete the following table by filling in themissing information.Advertisements for Home ImprovementQuestions 35-39: On your Answer Sheet, fill in the missing information in the following table.Part 3: Questions 40-49 are based on the following passage. [20 points3Passage 3 One of the earliest studies of television content was made in 1953. The researcheranalysed all the drama programmes broadcast in New York City in the first week of Januarythat year. He found that the dramas concentrated on people in their courting or child-bearingages and portrayed disproportionately few of the young or old. The characters worked inprofessional, middle-class jobs rather than in routine white-collar or blue-collar ones, andmales outnumbered females by 2: 1. Villains tended to be older than heroes and were lesslikely to be white Americans. In 1964 another study of television drama found that ordinary jobs held by about half thepercentage of the actual work force were represented by only 10 percent of the TV labourforce. Most of the workers represented on TV programmes were in high prestige jobs.Another work bias in the TV dramas was towards law enforcement. A third of all the jobsrepresented on TV in the 1964 study were associated with police and crime control. In 1973 some things had not changed. A study in that year found that there was an overportrayal of men and middle class occupations. However in this decade the portrayal ofnon-whites had increased. A 1972 study o{ television advertisements also found that theimage of women was poor. Women were portrayed in fewer occupations and in occupations inwhich they had little power or prestige. Since the mid-1970s, however, the image of women on the screen has changed.Although the bias is still male-oriented, many more women are seen on television screens andwomen are more likely now to be portrayed in high prestige and power occupations. However the bias a. gainst presenting ordinary real life workers on the screen remains. Westill rarely see people who are bus drivers, saleswomen or cleaners in television dramas ineither Britain or the United States. A further consistent bias in television is its tendency to present the world as a moreviolent place than it really is. In both the news and in the disproportionate number of policeand crime dramas there is a preoccupation with disasters, accidents and tragedies. Many of us watch television to escape from 'real life', but we also watch it as our majorsource of information about the world. It is interesting, then, to consider the way that theimages of the world that we acquire from television are constructed.Questions 40-44: Fill in the following summary with the information in the text. Researchers have studied television (40) for half a century now. They havefound that the (41) of the world that we acquire from television are constructed, and some sectors of the society have always been portrayed disproportionately. According tothe researches carried out in Britain and the United States, the young, the old and womenwere under represented in the 1950s. In the 60s, a study of television drama found that (42) held by about half the percentage of the actual work force wererepresented by only 10 percent of the TV labour force. A study in the early 70s found theimage of (43) was poor. Though this changed in the mid 70s, the bias againstpresenting ordinary real life workers on the screen remains. However, there has always beenan over portrayal of (44) dramas on TV.Questions 45-49: Read the passage again, and then decide whether the following statements are true or false according to the passage. Write "T" for True and "F" for False on the Answer Sheet. 45. The content of television programmes was first studied in 1953. 46. According to the first study villains were most likely to be portrayed as older andnon white. 47. In the studies in the 1950s, 1960s and the 1970s high prestige occupations wereunder represented. 48. The portrayal of women on television began to improve from the mid 1970s. 49. A further consistent bias in television in Britain and the U.S. is violence and crimerepresented on TV is less than in real life.Section III: Writing Test 20 pointsInstructions:■This test will take 30 minutes.■Write your essay on the Answer Sheet.■You may use the space below to write an outline or a draft.■Your essay should be about 150 words.Write a short essay on celebrating the Spring Festival.
