Part l: Questions (25--29) are based on passage 1. (10 points ) Passage 1 Dutch treat is a late-nineteenth-century term, and it originally refers to a dinner where everone is expected to pay for his own share of the food and drink. If people go 'Duleh treat', or simply 'go Dutch', it means that they will share the expenses of a social engagement. There are many other 'Dutch' expressions in English, many of which were invented in Britain in the seventeenth century, when the Dutch and the English were commercial and military rivals. The British used 'Dutch' to refer to something bad, cheap and sham. A 'Dutch bargain' at that time was an uneven, one sided deal; 'Dutch reckoning' was an unitemized account; and 'Dutch widow' was slang for prostitute. Later centuries brought in 'Duteh courage', for bravery induced by drink; 'Dutch concert', for discordant music;' Dutch nightingale', meaning a frog; and ' double Dutch', for incomprehensible language,or unintelligible talk. Some of the expressions are still in use today, but some are not. In fact, in American English, some 'Dutch' expressions have nothing to do with the Dutch, but something with the German. Itwas probably because of the similar spelling and pronunciation that people made a mistake in distinguishing between 'Dutch' and 'Deutsch' (the German word for German), when German immigrants came to America in the 1700s. For instance, 'the Pennsylvania Dutch' refers to the Gernan descendants, instead of the Dutch descendants, living in Permsylvania. Questions (25---29) Multiple Choice: Choose the best answer among the choices given. Write the appropriate letters in the space indicated on the answer sheet. 25. If someone invites you to dinner and says 'let's go Dutch', he means A. that he'll invite you to a Dutch restaurant B. that you'll buy Bis dinner C. thai you are expected to pay your own meal 26. Many of the 'Dutch' expressions were invented with derogatory(贬义) sense, because A. the Dutch were underdeveloped people B. Britain and Holland were competitors at that time C. the Dutch had many bad habits 27. With the information you get from Paragraph 2, make a guess at the meaning of the sentence 'You are in Dutch'. It probably means A. 'You are in Holland' B. 'You are in trouble' C. 'You are lucky' 28. According to the passage, some naive American 'Dutch' expressions were related 1o the German instead of the Dutch, simply because A. people hated the German as much as the Dutch B. people made a joke about the German C. people made a mistake at the beginning 29. According to the passage, is TRUE. A. all the 'Dutch' expressions in English were invented in Britain in the seventeenth century B. some of the 'Dutch' expressions are still used by English speaking people today C. Dutch treat is a late seventeenth century term Part 2: Questions (30--34) are based on passage 2. (10 points ) Passage 2 Bali is a tiny island that today is part of Indonesia. It is a pretty island that has many mountains and a pleasant climate. For a long time, Bali was cut off from much of thc world. The people of Bali were happy and gay and had a peaceful life. They were not allowed to fight or have wars. They made rules to keep apart those people who wanled to fight. Bali was divided into seven small kingdoms. The land around each kingdom was kept empty, and no one lived there. Since the kingdoms did not share the same borders, the people could not fight about them. On Bali, even children were not allowed m fight. If two children started a fight over a toy, someone separated them. When two boys argued, they would agree not to speak to each other. Sometimes they did not talk together for months. This gave the boys a chance to forget their anger. Families who were angry with each other also promised not to speak. Their promise was written clown, and the whole village knew aboul it. If they broke their promise, they had to offer gifts to tbeir gods. Questions 30 34 True or False: Mark the following statements as T (true) or F (false) on your answer sheet. 30. Bali is a tiny island which is the north part of Indonesia. 31. Parl 3: Questions (35--44) are based on passage 3. (20 points ) Passage 3 I wonder if any other readers who do not have a job feel as frustrated as 1 do by many people's responses. I am repeatedly asked "Why aren't you working?" and I feel this question is a criticism. People seem to be suggesting that I am lazy and useless, wasting my life "doing nothing". Is it so wrong to want to stay at home and take care of my home and family? I enjoy it and would like to remind all those women who are critical of people like me that it is possible to stay at home and feel valued and fulfilled. My lmsband and two children really appreciate me and the atmosphere in our house is happy and positive. Luckily, my husband earns enough money to support us all but I believe that, in many ways, I save money by staying at home. If I had a job, I would need help with the children, the home and the garden. I would need to have a freezer to store food, have a microwave cooker to save time. I would have to buy expensive convenience foods because I wouldn't have time to cook properly. I would have to pay baby-sitters, music teachers, odd-job men and many others. I do not want to pay other people to work for my family! I love being with Them in all sorts of different situations. My days are as busy and satisfying as those of most people who have jobs outside the home. As well as doing the usual cooking and cleaning, I make healthy and economicalsoups, jam, biscuits and cakes. I help my children with lheir homework and organize exciting games for them and their friends. Staying at home all day is not boring, I do all the household decorating and repairs. I make clothes for the whole family. And, what is more important, I have time to really talk to my husband and children. I plan my time carefully so that I can attend courses at the local college and take part in local politics and charity work. I would advise any parent who can afford it to slay at home. It is economically and psychologically wise to do so -- if that's what you want. Perhaps some of my main crilics are people who don't enjoy working at home for the family. I do not criticize people who choose to work. I just wish they would allow me to do as 1 choose. I am proud to be a housewife.
