In order to learn a foreign language, four things are necessary. Firstly, we must be able to understand the language when we hear it spoken. Secondly, we must be able to speak it ourselves. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language and fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to compose sentences, arrange them in paragraph, and write a good composition.
There is no easy way to success in language learning. It is no much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meanings. We must learn words not by themselves, but in sentences. We must learn by using the language. Practice is very important. We must practice speaking and writing the language whenever we can.

In the West, a formal invitation is usually written. It usually ends with ESVP, meaning “please reply”. The one who receive this invitation must write back to the sender, making clear whether he or she accepts or not. However, an informal invitation can be sent in more than one way. Apart from writing a letter, the invitation can be sent orally or by telephone.
When invited to a dinner party, it is quite common for the guest to take a bottle of spirits or wine or some beer and give them to the host or hostess on arrival. They are expected to arrive on time or a few minutes later.
Some times someone invites you to have dinner in a restaurant; it does not necessarily mean that he is going to pay the bill. He might expect you to “go Dutch”, which means for each person to pay their own bill.

Passage 1
The British Isles consists of two large Islands. One is called Ireland and the other Britain.
Britain, or Great Britain, is the larger of these two islands, and it is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England.
The United Kingdom is that part of the British Isles ruled over by the Queen. It consists of Scotland, Wales and England, and also about one-sixth of Ireland, the Northern part. The rest part of Ireland is self-governing. The full title of the United Kingdom is therefore “The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”
England is the largest, most populous, and generally the richest section. The English people take this too much for granted, and tend to use the words “England” and “English” when they mean “Britain” and “British”. This sometimes annoys the Scots and the Welsh.
Ireland became part of the United Kingdom in 1801. But in 1922, Ireland divided itself into two: Northern Ireland remained loyal to the Crown and the rest of the country formed an Irish Free State, late called Eire, and now the Republic of Ireland.
The Republic of Ireland is almost entirely Roman Catholic, and it does not regard itself as British, and is not now even a supporter of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
31. The United Kingdom is made up of ______.
A. Great Britain and Ireland
B. Great Britain and Northern Ireland
C. Scotland, England and Wales
32. Which of the following is the largest, most populous and richest section in Britain?
A. Scotland B. England C. Wales
33. Ireland divided itself into two parts in ______.
A. 1801 B. 1822 C. 1922
34. English people tends to use the word ______ when they mean “British”, which some times annoys other nations of Britain.
A. English B. Scottish D. Welsh
35. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. The Republic of Ireland is almost entirely Roman Catholic.
B. The Republic of Ireland does not regard itself as British.
C. The Republic of Ireland is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
Passage 2
In England, Christmas Day and Good Friday have been holidays for religious reasons since the establishment of Christianity in this country. Christmas is celebrated on December 25. The other public holidays are Easter Monday, May Day (May 1st), the Spring Bank Holiday (the last Monday in August), Boxing Day (December 26th) and New Year’s Day. The term “Bank Holiday” goes back to the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, which owes its name to the fact that banks are closed on the days specified.
Boxing Day takes its name from the old custom of giving employees or tradesmen an annual present or “Christmas box” on that day. It has nothing to do with the sport of “boxing”! If Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls at the weekend, the weekday which follows December 25th and 26th become a Bank Holiday.
Easter Monday is generally regarded as an unofficial consecration of spring. In many towns there are funfairs. The fair on Hempstead Heath, in the north of London, is particularly famous. Easter Monday used to be the day on which the ladies would parade in the parks, wearing new dresses and hats. Although this custom is dying out, the tradition still provides ladies with a pretext for buying spring clothes.
The August Bank Holiday is probably the most popular one of the year, partly because it comes at a time when children are not at school. Very many people try to make this a long weekend, and go away to the seaside or the country. The result is that anyone who can manage to take holiday at another time would be well advised to do so, for the roads get congested with traffic.
In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) is also a Bank Holiday. St. Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland. It is curious that St. George’s Day (April 23rd) is not a public holiday in England, and in addition that day is the anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare.
The public holidays in Scotland are New Year’s Day and the second of January, Good Friday, May Day and usually the first Monday in August. New Year’s Eve is called Hogmanay in Scotland and an occasion for much joyous and noisy celebration. It is a Scottish tradition that the first person to cross the threshold of your house on New Year’s Day should be dark-haired—such a person brings luck for the coming year. This widely practised custom is called “first footing”.
36. Which of the following is NOT a religious Holiday?
A. Good Friday B. Easter Monday C. May Day
37. Boxing Day ________.
A. has nothing to do with the sport of “boxing”
B. takes its name from the sport of “boxing”
C. is the holiday before Christmas Day
38. Part of the reason that the August Bank Holiday is the most popular one of the year is that ______.
A. it comes at a time when children are not at school
B. many people go away to the seaside
C. the roads get congested with traffic
39. St. Patrick’s Day is ______.
A. a Bank Holiday in England
