Dirctions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or  unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B), C) arid D). You should decide on the best choice and circle the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.

Questions 36-40 are based on the following passage:

In California, English-only supporters tried to forbid Chinese and protested publication of commercial handbooks in Spanish-language. In Florida, they challenged housing advertisements in Spanish.

As we know, from the earliest days, many of those who arrived here spoke no English.But most soon learned it. In the process, they enriched our language and our way of life. In some areas, such as South Florida, Spanish has become more widely spoken than ever before. That trend disturbs the official-English supporters. They say it could weaken nationalunity. Their solution is to make a law that English is the only official language in the nation.So far, 14 states have accepted that approach, but 19 other states wisely rejected such proposals last year

Supporters of official-English laws say they want to make this public policy clear to all and give English legal protection. They are wrong. At best, such laws will have little effect. At worst they could result in the canceling of bilingual(双语的)media and bilingual education programs and stop the vital service for non-English speakers by providing no government translators. That won' t help English. That won' t help this nation, but will hurt people who don't speak English.

Questions 41-45 are based on the following passage;

Why do old people begin to act old? The question may seem easy, but in fact we do not have a good answer to it. Most animals never have a chance to become old, so we cannot look to the example of animals for any explanation. If we look at humans alone we can make guesses, but it is very hard to be certain about the main reasons for any human actors. Do old people act old for biological reasons alone, or are there other explanations for their actions?

In every society, people expect old men and women to act in certain ways. There is an image of old age. We learn this image as chidren, and it continues to have an effect on all our  lives. For example, we usually expect old people to leave their jabs and to wear less colorful clothes .In other words, we generally expect them to withdraw from active life.

Is there any biological reason for this withdrawal? If old people have a chance to continue in their jobs, they generally are successful. The biological effects of age seem to explain very few of these changes. Age does clearly have some biological effects: in general, one's actions become slower with age. But the main cause of the changes in the lives of old people may well be the expectations of society.

41. Why cannot we observe and experiment with animals to learn about human old age?

Her love and devotion for my brother and me made our lack of material possessions seem insignificant. Even today, if I were given a choice between having love at home and no wealth, I would want it just the way I had it. I grew up poor in material things but rich in love.

Since my father was never around long enough to teach me physical things or to play games with me, I didn't succeed in any competitive sport.
