Part 1: Questions 21 -- 30 are based on the following passage.
Passage 1
The ‘Read On’ bookstore is managed by the owners, Amelia and Donald Sinclair. They attend to all the major administration of the shop -- the ordering of books, the general accounts, staffing and so on. They employ a total of 12 people: an assistant manager, sales staff, a store keeper, an accountant and service staff.
Eight of these staff members work in and around the shop during opening hours. The assistant manager sells books but also runs the information desk, which provides a full range of services for customers wishing to locate books, find out publication details or place special orders. The sale of books is mainly taken care of by three full-time workers and three part-time workers who are all familiar with the stock in the shop and able to offer advice to customers as required.
The store keeper is responsible for receiving and recording new supplies, refilling the book shelves and generally keeping the stock room in order. He occasionally helps out on the sales desk. A professional accountant is employed to do major accounting for the business on the last Friday of each month.
The service staff for the shop consists of only two people: a cleaning lady who works for two hours before the shop opens each day, and a general handyman who is a retired man who works on a casual basis, paid by the hour, when he is needed for repairs and odd jobs.

Passage 2
Grandmother' s Culinary Advice
My dear Charlotte,
Thank you so much for the lovely basket of fruit you sent to us on our wedding anniversary. I can hardly believe that your grandfather and I have been married for 60 years. However, we did get a telegram of congratulations from the Queen, so I suppose that we really have been together for all that time.
In your note you asked the secret of a successful marriage. Well I believe it has a lot to do with our very different attitudes to food. Your granddad likes-to have a big breakfast, but I only like a cup of tea and a piece of toast in the morning. He likes to stop about 12 noon and have a glass of beer and a plate of egg and chips. I find that too filling, and I like to get on with what I am doing, so I prefer to have some fruit and some nuts at midday.
We both like to have our major meal about seven o'clock in the evening, but we like very different things. Your granddad always has some kind of fish for his dinner. He prefers Tommy Ruffs, the best fish in South Australia, he calls that fish. He also likes kippers, those salty smoked fish that the English and the Scots introduced into Australia. He refuses to eat any vegetables at all, except for potatoes. He likes them either, boiled, baked, mashed or made into chips. He always has another glass of beer with this meal.
I have quite different tastes. I like the foods that the other European and Asian cultures have introduced into Australia. Lasagna from Italy, Moussaka from Greece, green curry from Thailand and of course, my favorite, meat and vegetable dumplings from China. Whatever I have, 1 always have a salad of green vegetables and two glasses of wine with my meal.
Now, I am sure that my diet is much more balanced than your granddad’s. But he says that now is 79 he is going to eat what he likes. Why is this difference conducive to a happy marriage? Well we have to buy our food from different shops, cook our food in different ways and borrow different cookery books from the library. So we have a lot of different experiences during the day and a lot to talk about in the evening!
All my love,
Grandma

Part 3: Questions 36--40 are based on this part.
Passage 3
Trends in the U.S. in the1990’s and Beyond
As we go through the 90's, the changes that are occurring in many life situations and lifestyles in the United States are quite dramatic. The changes are resulting not only from simple demographic trends, e. g. , the fact that the large Baby Boom generation has now become a Graying Boom, but also from changes in technology, economic conditions, and from the consequences of work and lifestyle changes in the previous decades.
One demographic trend that has been going on for some time now is the low birthrate in the country. The result of having fewer babies around has become a threat to the business of some baby product manufacturers. They have had to come up with new strategies to use and new markets to enter to keep their firms healthy.
A trend related both to the low birthrate and longer life-spans is the aging of America, with increases in the numbers of advancing middle-age (40’s and early50’s) and retirement age (over 65), with decreases in the numbers of certain other age groups, e. g. , late teens and early 20%. This points to new opportunities for some types of products, declines for others, and changes in product packaging to cater to the needs of the larger markets. An example of one change is the increased use of large type on packages designed to appeal to more mature buyers.
Family-related trends in the last 10-20 years, such as large increases in two-income families, where the wives work outside the home, and increased divorce rates, with the resulting single-parent homes, have also had a big impact on the demand for certain types of products. One example has been the explosion of day-care centers for children of pre-school age. Another example relates to the loss of leisure time and the desire for leisure time products to be more convenient. Such desire, tied to the technological developments surrounding VCR, has created a whole new industry and lifestyle change of many.
There are many other trends or possible trends that may have an impact on the buying habits and tendencies of Americans in the coming decade. Such things as population shifts to different regions, continuing problems in the economy, environmental concerns, new governmental regulations, and the increasing rate of technological innovations may very well have major impact on the changing face of this society.
Questions 36 - 40. Answer the following questions according to the text.
36. In addition to demographic trends, what are the main causes of the changes in American society today?
37. Why have the manufacturers of baby product~ had to look for new markets?
38. Why do you think there has been an increase in the use of large type on packaging?
39. Why is there a greater demand for day-care canters for young children?
40. What new industry has been created as a result of the loss of leisure time?
