An Israeli law banning too skinny models went into effect with the start of 2013. The law, approved last March in Israel, requires models to prove they have maintained a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 18.5 for three months before a fashion show. That means a woman who is 5'8'' tall can weigh no less than 119 pounds.

“This law is another step in the war against eating disorders,” said physician Adatto. “Underweight models,” he explained, “can no longer serve as role models for innocent young people who copy their false image of being skinny.”

But some critics in this country say it is misguided, focusing on weight instead of health. They also say the Israeli ban is bound to fail because of the strong power of the fashion industry. “I think it’s an approach that isn’t going to work.” Said eating disorder expert Susan Ice, who worked with an organization which creates a healthy working environment for models.

But Adatto told the reporter that he began to concern the issue after meeting an ambitious model who looked like she needed to be hospitalized. He said. “I realized that only legislation can change the situation. There was no time to waste, so many girls were dieting to death.”

However, the efforts to regulate models’ weight in Spain and Italy have not resulted in significant changes in part because of difficulties in determining reliable methods of measuring weight and health.

Still, folks including Ice say there’s no denying that images from Hollywood and the fashion industry can be difficult for young women to deal with. “Certainly I don't believe the modeling industry has caused the rise in eating disorders, but it makes it harder,” she says. “It’s a difficult recovery environment, worshiping thinness as the beauty ideal.”

56. What does BMI in the first paragraph refer to?

A. A new show held by those skinny models.

B. A worldwide prize for the healthiest model.

C. A measure of body health based on height and weight.

D. A kind of medicine to cure eating disorders.

57. One benefit the new Israeli law may bring is ________.

A. to change the working conditions of models

B. to prevent models from suffering from eating disorders

C. to lower the chance of skinny models’ death

D. to provide guidance for women worshiping thinness

58. In the opinion of the critics, the law won’t succeed because .

A. the fashion industry is much too influential

B. it misleads young women to form a bad eating habit

C. it doesn’t provide a proper approach that can work well

D. it doesn’t create a healthy working environment for models

59. According to the passage, the new Israeli law banning skinny models is .

A. practical B. acceptable C. reasonable D. controversial

The respiratory(呼吸系统) virus known as SARS has appeared to spread in the United States only to family members of health workers with close contact to a sick person.

On Thursday, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there might be a case of severe acute respiratory syndrome(综合症) spreading through the workplace.

Dr. Julie Gerberding said a suspected SARS virus patient who became ill after traveling to Asia might have infected a co-worker in Florida, which made her “very worried”.

So far, a dozen people—nine family members and three health workers—were infected after coming into close contact with the person with SARS. The rest of the 166 suspected American cases have something to do with people who were infected while traveling in Asia.

In the Gainesville, Fla. area, a 47-year-old woman was believed to have been infected at work by a 60-year-old woman who was the nation’s first suspected SARS case, said Tom Belcuore, director of the Alachua County health department.

Since the World Health Organization announced a worldwide warning last month about SARS, the United States has started infection control in hospitals and among families of suspected cases.

Florida officials said a school in Okaloosa County went through a cleaning after a 6-year-old boy suspected of having SARS appeared at school with slight symptoms. “Health officials are watching the boys’ contacts at school to make sure no one else is infected,” said Rob Hayes, health department spokesman, “The boy may have been infected from a family member,” Hayes said, “We immediately became aware of it and had the child sent home. He’s staying at home with his family until 10 days after symptoms disappear.”

The researchers guessed that the virus might have come from animals. However, the scientists have not ruled out the possibility that some other microbe might also help make SARS more serious or easier to catch.

64. The best title for this text is _______.

A. A Worldwide Warning B. Suspected SARS Cases

C. What Is SARS D. Possible Spread of SARS in the USA

65. The writer wrote this text mainly to _______.

A. discuss the danger of SARS

B. report research result about SARS

C. inform people of the spread of SARS

D. explain to the readers what SARS is

66. How many cases of suspected SARS are there in the U.S.A. according to the text?

A. 166. B.178. C. 12. D. 181.

Snow falls in the Earth’s extreme North and South throughout the year. However, the heaviest snowfalls have been reported in the mountains of other areas during winter. Snow is even known to fall near the Equator (赤道),but only on the highest mountains.

Snow contains much less water than rain, but much of the water the world uses comes from snow. Melting snow provides water for rivers, electric power stations and agricultural crops. In the western United States, mountain snow provides up to seventy-five percent of all surface water supplies.

Snowfall helps to protect plants and some wild animals from winter weather. Fresh snow is made largely of air trapped among the snow crystals (晶体). Because the air has trouble moving, the movement of heat is limited. Snow also influences the movement of sound waves. The surface of the snow takes in, or absorbs, sound waves. As snow grows older or if there have been strong winds, it can become hard and flat. Then, the snow’s surface will help to send back sound waves.

Snow may be beautiful, but it can be deadly. It is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people. Many people die in traffic accidents on roads covered with snow and ice or from being seriously stuck in the winter storm. Others die from heart attacks caused by too much physical activity out in the cold.

People may not be able to avoid living in areas where it snows often. However, they can avoid becoming victims of snowstorms. People should stop driving and stay at home until the storm has passed. People living in these areas should carry emergency supplies in their vehicle. These include food, emergency medical supplies, and extra clothing to stay warm and dry.

67. Mountain snowfall _____.

A.provides up to seventy—five percent of water supplies worldwide

B.has never occurred near the Equator of the earth

C.brings less of the water the world uses than rain does

D.is heavier than that in the South and the North Poles

68. Snow protects plants and wild animals from cold weather by _____.

A.supplying much more air B.limiting heat movement

C.absorbing strong winds D.sending back sound waves

69. Snow can be deadly mainly because it can _____.

A.cause road accidents

B.make people stuck in winter storms

C.make people victims of snowstorms

D.lead to heart attacks

70. What will the text probably tell us following the last paragraph? ____.

A.How to prevent heart attacks out in cold

B.Where we can get emergency supplies

C.How to drive during snowstorms

D.Why we should stay warm and dry in winter

After the mid-term examination, a parents’ meeting will be held in our school. Parents’ meetings are often held to help parents contact the school and teachers and improve the students’ studies, but different people have different ideas. Here are our views on parents’ meetings.

Most students think it is of great importance to have the meeting for parents to know more about their children at school. What is more, parents can get some good advice and useful information from teachers. On the contrary, a minority of students hold the view that it is useless because they think their parents may know their poor marks and improper behavior at school.

In my opinion, to understand children better, parents should keep in touch with teachers, so parents’ meetings are quite necessary.

Text 1

M: Are you making cups today?

W: No, we’re going to make a large vase for some flowers. I like going to class and learning new things. It makes me feel good.

Text 2

M: Do you want the same cut as last time?

W: The same on top, but I’d like it a little longer over the ears and in the back.

Text 3

W: I wonder what’s happened to Jerry. He hasn’t been around for at least 2 weeks.

M: He took leave to see his mother in Europe.

Text 4

W: Hello! I am interested in purchasing that clock. I have been late to work almost every day this week.

M: Well, luckily, this one has an alarm clock. I use the same one every day myself, and it is very helpful.

Text 5

W: Lewis, Don told me that he could get you that Lady Gaga signature through a friend at work if you’re still interested in getting it.

M: Still interested in getting it? Um, I have every single Lady Gaga CD, and my wall is covered in her pictures! If I ever get a pet dog, I’ll probably name her Gaga, that’s how into her I am, so…

Text 6

W: Look at those pictures! They’re fantastic! You’re so talented, James. And wow, what a cool camera!

M: It’s a Nikon D200, and it’s really easy to use. But now, I’m planning to save up for a new Olympus E1. It will definitely cost me an arm and a leg.

W: Sounds quite professional. Anyway, would you please bring your camera with you next Sunday and take some pictures of us while we’re playing tennis?

M: Sure, you got it.

Text 7

M: There is just one problem, madam. Your driver’s license is no longer valid.

W: What?

M: Yes. Today is the 19th, and your driver’s license was valid through the 17th. I’m afraid we can’t accept it. Do you have another form of ID?

W: Not with me. My passport is at home, but that’s 30 minutes away.

M: I do apologize, but this is our policy. If you want to continue with your deposit, you might have to go home and get it.

W: That’s OK. I’ll just come back tomorrow with my passport. I need to try to get a new license now. Otherwise, I won’t be able to drive home!

Text 8

W: Can I help you?

M: Oh, I’m just looking, thanks. Well, actually, I’m looking for something for my sister.

W: And what exactly are you looking for?

M: I don’t really know. A dress?

W: Right. Well, what color does your sister usually wear?

M: Oh, dear…

W: Okay, what color are her eyes?

M: Green.

W: OK, purple usually suits people with green eyes.

M: Oh, great, purple’s fine.

W: Now, what size is she?

M: Um, well… she isn’t very big, but she’s not particularly thin, either.

W: That’ll be a medium, then. Well, we have this rather nice silk evening dress here…

M: Good, I’ll take it. How much is it?

W: $70, sir. How would you like to pay?

M: Seventy?! Uh, by credit card, please.

W: Fine. If you could just sign…

M: Here you are. Goodbye.

W: Just a minute, sir. Here’s your receipt.

M: Oh yes, uh… can she exchange it if it doesn’t fit her?

W: Yes, but she needs to bring the receipt.

Text 9

W: Young man, I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation with the gentleman who just gave you directions.

M: Uh-huh…

W: I think he must be confused. The directions he gave you are all wrong. If you follow them, you’ll have a lovely ride, but you’ll end up at the zoo.

M: What should I do, then?

W: Come with me. I’m heading in the direction where you can catch the bus you want. We’ll just continue down Gold Road here for a few minutes.

M: OK, great. Thank you.

W: Here we are. This is the corner of Wall Street and Gold Road, and here’s your bus stop. Take the F-1 down to the river, and get off at Riverside Road.

M: And that’s where the church is?

W: No, transfer there to the L-5 going north. The end of the line for L-5 is just across the street from Riverside Church. The whole ride shouldn’t take you more than 30 minutes.

M: Thanks. I’m glad you set me straight. Is that my bus coming down the street now?

W: Yes, it is. I hope you have exact change. The driver doesn’t give change to passengers.

M: I have quite a few quarters with me. Thanks again! Goodbye.

Text 10

M: Many young girls dream of being models. Now, my first question: How were you able to make your dream a reality?

W: I actually spent my childhood being a model. My mother put me in TV commercials and other advertisements when I was just a small baby.

M: Do you think that modeling has influenced your life at all?

W: It’s difficult to say. Sometimes I feel like it’s hard to make friends when you are a model. It seems like all they care about is my looks. I travel a lot, and that also puts a lot of stress on any relationships that I have.

M: What is your favorite part of being a model?

W: I really like all of the traveling that I get to do. I have been able to go to Europe and Latin America and a lot of other beautiful locations around the world. I think the best thing, though, is having people look at me and think that I’m beautiful. I love the attention.

M: Now, finally, do you have any advice for young girls that want to be models?

W: Sure! I just want to tell you guys never to give up, and don’t let anyone ever tell you that you are not beautiful…because everyone is beautiful in their own way!
